Announcements for Michigan Farmers


When: Friday, March 5, 2010 from 1 p.m.-5 p.m.
Where: Riverside Room, Kellogg Conference Center, East Lansing, MI
Why: This even features organic research and outreach conducted around Michigan.

MOFFA is requesting proposals for individuals, organizations, or groups to use the MOFFA Mobile Food Processing Unit for organic processing that includes education, outreach, and community development efforts that promote local and organic food.
 
The trailer has been used to: prepare baked goods for direct sales; holding cooking workshops and demonstrations on jam-making, freezing fruits and vegetables, and baked goods; package mixes for flour and grain prodcuts; farmer's market promotions; and to pickle asparagus.
 
Proposals must be submitted to the MOFFA Board no later than March 1, 2010. Final decision on all proposals received by the deadline will be made at the MOFFA Board meetings in March and April, 2010.

When: January 30, 2010
Where: Grayling High School, Grayling, MI
Why: Last year, we had over 700 people attend the Conference. Exhibitors are encouraged to promote their products and/or services and have the opportunity for direct sales at the conference
How: Two options are available for exhibitors Paid exhibiors ($75 including one conference registration) or Non-profit Exhibitors ($55 including one conference registration). Booth fees include lunch, 8-foot table and display area. Additional people are $30 per person. Exhibits must be free standing. Reservations for vendor spaces last year were full well in advance of the conference. Spaces for this year’s conference will be filled on a first come, first served basis.
 
The third option is an Information Table set up for brochures, pamphlets, catalogs and other printed material. This table will be will be accessible to people during breaks, lunches, prior to and after the conference. We suggest that you send or bring 100-300 pieces of information that will be of interest to conference attendees. We will be unable to return any leftover materials. Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan announced that a first-of-its-kind agreement has been reached between the U.S. and Canada that will expand opportunities for organic producers in both countries. The “equivalency agreement” follows a review by both nations of the other’s organic certification sold as organic in Canada, and vice versa. Click link above to view entire article.
 

When: Program Dates for 2010 are March 1st to November 19th for this fall time intensive program.
Where: MSU Student Organic Farm
Why: The Organic Farmer Training program is a 9 month intensive training program in year round organic farming. The program is committed to successfully preparing graduates to operate their own farm or community food system endeavor. Graduates will be qualified to a run small-scale farm, work closely with existing farmers, and be advocates of local food systems based on firsthand experience and training with local organic production.
